The World Told You Lies about Happiness

I hate to break it to you, but the world told you lies about happiness.

Happiness is:

  • NOT Earned
  • NOT Deserved
  • NOT a Reward
  • NOT Selfish
  • NOT produced by Things

I think most of us have long become used to happiness being a reward for something we do or something we buy. For instance, I got a new phone this week and I was excited about it and I do think it brought me a certain level of joy, but it will never bring me happiness.

Happiness comes from within.  Happiness is an attitude. Happiness is cultivating healthy and PLEASING thoughts. Happiness is lasting.

There are 2 Main things to know about Happiness:

  • You have a choice to be Happy.
  • Happiness brings you Freedom

What I love about knowing this is that it gives you so much autonomy.  Stick with me, if I have a choice to be happy or not and I only try to think pleasing thoughts right now, I am FREE!

I am NOT a slave to the world around me. You are NOT a slave to the world around you. 

We have been conditioned to respond in annoyance, in spitefulness, in anger when the world is hostile to us.

Therefore, when somebody cuts us off while driving or someone is rude or our children are naughty, we respond in kind.

I get it. It really is a trained reaction. I can’t count the number of times I’ve responded in ways I later regretted. My actions did not make me or the person they were directed at feel any better. In fact, I know I often felt worse!

But, how would your life change if you DIDN’T REACT in kind or rather unkind?

WHAT IF YOU CHOSE TO ACT IN A WAY WHERE YOU THOUGHT THAT OTHERS ACTIONS HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH YOU?

Maybe that person who cut you off was headed to the hospital. Or maybe they are late for work, and haven’t we all been there?

Maybe that cashier who was rude was up all night with their sick baby and then had to come to work anyway because they could not afford not to.

Maybe your kid has so much going on in their brain and trying to navigate a world they don’t completely understand that they misbehaved.

Maybe, just maybe, everything going on that triggers your unhappiness has nothing at all to do with you.

So, why are you letting it control whether you are happy or not?

Really?

Would you let those same people tell you what to do or control your actions? I bet your first thought is Heck, no!!

But if you keep just reacting, that is exactly what you are doing.

So, back to happiness.  Wouldn’t life be whole lot more pleasant if you just decided to think pleasant helpful thoughts instead of the world dictating your thoughts?

If happiness is an attitude, then you have a choice to be happy or not.  If happiness is an attitude, you don’t have to earn or deserve it. You just have to think differently.

Think joyously. Think gratefully. Think kindly. Think that the outside world has nothing to do with you because happiness comes from within.

I love this quote from the bestselling book Psycho-Cybernetics:

Spinoza said, “Happiness is not the reward of virtue, but virtue itself; nor do we delight in happiness because we restrain our lusts; but on the contrary, because we delight in [happiness], therefore we are able to restrain them.”

Basically, Happiness gives you freedom and choice and natural restraint against doing wrong.

So, I encourage you to change your mindset.

Remember:

  • Other people’s behavior most often has nothing to do with you. Don’t take it personal.
  • Happiness comes from within. Choose to think pleasant thoughts.
  • Happiness gives you the freedom to choose your behavior and restrain negative behaviors.
