Fake News, Alternative Facts about Happiness

Let’s keep talking about happiness. Specifically, one of the top things that get in the way of our happiness is not separating FACT vs OPINION.

What is a fact?

Fact is something that is indisputable.  It is the truth.

What is opinion?

Opinion is what you think about the situation and is usually based on feelings.

In this day and age, it seems to me that we are dealing more in opinions than facts. And, I am not talking politics. I am talking Life.

See, we are so concerned with how we see things, especially negative things, that we have stopped questioning ourselves and asking if those things are the truth.

I want to give you an example.

There is a woman who invests $50,000 into a business. She believes in the business. She thinks the business will work. It doesn’t. She loses the investment.

She cries out, “I am ruined. I lost $50,000, my life savings! I am never going to be able to make that money back!”

So, I see only one fact in this statement: She lost $50,000. That is the truth. She lost that amount of money.

The opinion is that she is ruined and that she won’t ever be able to get the money back. Losing money is never pleasant, but it doesn’t mean you can never get it back. It does not mean you are devastated.  Those negative opinions are what make you unhappy. Don’t you think that if she acknowledged that she lost the money and believed she could regain it, she would be happier, work harder, learn from her mistakes?

Believing those opinions will not only make you unhappy, it will make them come true.

I remember when my eldest was learning to read. Sometimes, she would get so frustrated and say, “I am never going to be able to read.”

Fact: She was not reading.

Opinion: She was never going to read.

What feelings come with her opinion? The top two are probably shame and fear. It’s hard to do anything when those emotions have taken over. We stopped for the day. I told her, “You are not reading…yet.  You are working hard and I am confident in you that you will be able to read soon. And, it’s ok not to get something right the first few times. That’s just called learning.” And it applies to adults, too.

Also, I’m happy to report she kept at it and loves to read now.  She is at the top of her class!

I encourage you to acknowledge the facts. You can’t ignore the bad parts of life, but don’t let the negative emotions, mainly fear, grab hold of you. Fear supplies as many negative thoughts as it can. And, that affects your happiness.

Next time something not so great happens, acknowledge it for what it is. Accept it as fact, then start working on how to fix it. Don’t waste time letting your worries and doubt take over. Once Fear is in the driver’s seat, it’s hard to get your car back. Trust, me. Fear will totally hijack your brain.  So, stop it before it starts. Then, make a plan and take action.  I have talked about how action is the only way to get past fear before. If you want to know more…click HERE

Happiness is a choice. Choose to see the facts.  Don’t let your opinions be the fake news that you believe.

  • Great post! YOU frame your own reality and by doing that you create the outcome. Reminds me of the quote by Walter Wintle

“If you think you are beaten, you are
If you think you dare not, you don’t,
If you like to win, but you think you can’t
It is almost certain you won’t.

If you think you’ll lose, you’re lost
For out of the world we find,
Success begins with a fellow’s will
It’s all in the state of mind.

If you think you are outclassed, you are
You’ve got to think high to rise,
You’ve got to be sure of yourself before
You can ever win a prize.

    Life’s battles don’t always go
To the stronger or faster man,
But soon or late the man who wins
Is the man WHO THINKS HE CAN!”
